Human composting (Natural Organic Reduction) is a gentle, natural process that converts human remains into soil using organic materials like wood chips, straw, and alfalfa. This soil can then be returned to the earth, used in community rehabilitation projects and for memorial plantings.

Composting human remains offers significant environmental benefits over cremation and traditional burial by creating nutrient-rich soil, avoiding harmful emissions (like mercury/CO2), eliminating embalming fluids, conserving land, and sequestering carbon, while also potentially being more affordable and giving back to nature through nourishing plants or trees.

Human composting is a legal option available in the USA and is now being advocated for by many groups, including Earthly Remains, around Australia.

We have a unique opportunity in achieving this in WA in that the Review of the WA Cemeteries Act 1986 and Cremation Act 1929 is currently underway.   It is essential for the pending updated Acts to expand the definition of cremation in WA to include human composting.  This will then enable human composting to be offered to the community.

The goal of Earthly Remains is to offer human composting to the community through a not-for-profit model. To make this a reality we need to show the community supports human composting as a body disposal option.  You can help by signing the e-petition currently before the WA Legislative Council.
